Good Friday was cold, dreary, and dark. Perfect weather for staying quiet and contemplating our Lord’s suffering. Our day was spent doing just that.
We decorated eggs with the kids in the morning using these lovely egg wraps.
Our farm, fresh eggs are brown and while we love our brown eggs, they present a problem for Easter egg dying. We have tried loads of natural dyes and most of them turn out another shade of brown or a lovely Army green. A couple of years ago we ran across these wraps and they are just so beautiful and easy that they instantly became a Good Friday tradition for the Burke family.
After egg dying we gathered as a family to pray the Stations of the Cross and then we spent the rest of the afternoon decorating Easter cookies for Sunday’s dinner.
Holy Saturday found us preparing our basket for blessing. Ever since the kids were really small, Papa has shaped marzipan figures with them on Holy Saturday morning. Some years we have had all works of religious art, but this year we had Yoda join our plate of sculptures.
The marzipan, along with our other items to be blessed, were taken to the church at noon. Our basket contained a beeswax paschal candle that the kids and I made on our last candle making day. This will grace our home altar and light our Sunday dinner table throughout the coming year.
We also included our lamb butter, salt, Easter eggs, hard rolls, a bottle of wine, a few potatoes, some Kerry Gold Irish cheddar, and our marzipan. These were all blessed and ready to be made part of our Easter Sunday celebration.
Easter Sunday was just gorgeous here in Ohio. I can’t remember when we have had such a warm, sunny Easter. The kids were up bright and early to open their baskets (4:00 am to be exact). They get a little excited about holidays! We were up so early that we had time to watch a movie, The War of the Vendee, that our son received in his basket.
We then drove to Cleveland to celebrate Easter in the Extraordinary Form of the Mass. A quick trip back home and we were busy preparing for our guests. We had 14 family members for dinner on Sunday and what a blessing the whole day was.
Easter Blessings from our family to yours during this season of Eastertide.
